TITLE "Notan/Gestalt (2)"
Rowland B. Wilson valued strong design in a painting and felt that it could be achieved through knowledge and application of Notan (the Dark-Light Principle) and Gestalt (the “configuration” of the image on the page). In this second page of illustrated “notes to himself” he captures the most important art elements in colorful small diagrams. The subjects covered are: Lines and the various ways to use them; Colors, including mixing grays from color rather than black and white; Color and Tonal Value featuring a chart of The Ladder of Intensity; Positive vs. Negative, with examples of Figure/Ground relationships and ways to enhance them; and Reversed Negatives. Rowland created a series of “visual shorthand” posters that he kept constantly on display in his studio. Done in his distinctive style they stand as individual works of art as well as compendiums of invaluable information. These distillations of ideology, techniques, art principles, tips and tricks are sure to become classic reference in the art of “making it look easy”.
